I lost track of Derek for a few years, but was thrilled to get an email from him in spring of 2023. It appears that he works for Boeing Research and Technology as an Electromagnetic Effects Engineer. Specifically, his role primarily focuses on developing numerical models and experimental techniques aimed at reducing the costs associated with certifying new technologies for lightning strike and electrostatics.

Derek reached out again in late 2025 and let me know that he just completed 10 years working at Boeing Research & Technology in North Charleston. It sounds like his work has stayed in the same avenue; "Derek works on the electromagnetic effects team and leads projects focused on developing physics-based models that aid in designing aircraft tolerant to the electromagnetic environment."
